Space planning is used in many ways in the design of interiors and architecture.
It is
used in the global concept to arrange a buildings primary functions such
as lifts, toilets,
loading bays etc. It is also used to plan work processes within the smallest
of spaces.
Each element of space planning is crucial to the correct arrangements
of the component
parts of a building. We are involved in all major aspects of space planning
and undertake
work for a variety of clients to help in maximising the use of their space.
In many instances we plan space layout for meeting room suites, dining
facilities
or receptions. Work can run in parallel with the interior design and the
construction
processes. All work is undertaken on CAD and can be updated on a regular
basis. Square footages
for cost allocation can be undertaken as can individual or department
square foot to
people ratios. We are often asked by clients to re-plan groups as their
business changes.

Space planning is used in many ways in
the design of interiors and Architecture. It is used in the global concept
to arrange a buildings primary functions such as lifts, toilets, loading
bays etc. It is also used to plan work processes within the smallest
of spaces. Each element of space planning is crucial to the correct arrangements
of the component parts of a building. We are involved in all major aspects
of space planning and undertake work for a variety of clients to help
in maximising the use of their space.
Unusual work has included space planning press facilities in several 1st
division football grounds for the European Cup and five rugby grounds
in South Africa for the Rugby World Cup.
The bulk of our work is involved in analysis of major financial and business
organisations to check or rationalise their spaces. In many instances
a company is either downsizing or expanding and space has to be rearranged
to suit new requirements or work processes.
EXPANDING COMPANIES
A company expanding often finds the space it has set aside is too small
to grow into. It may be there is ample space but it is in the wrong
place, it may be that there is no available space but that immediate expansion
is required. We analyse the space, the way it is used and form ways
to create expansion space.
COMPANY CONSOLIDATION
It may be that with increased efficiency or changes in business direction
it becomes apparent that there is wasted space. We undertake planning
and analysis to consolidate space to create opportunities for sub letting
or importing of new groups.
COMPANY REORGANISATION
Over a short time span, the planning of a company can become disjointed
and space can be wasted. This often arises from continually squeezing
more desks into existing space. Over time the workplace becomes an unorganised
collection of desks and cupboards. We look afresh at the whole organisation
of a company and put forward strategies to bring renewed order to an office.
We plan out changes in phases and are used to undertaking this work in
heavily occupied offices.
NEW PREMISES
In selecting new premises, a space may on the face of it look the ideal
office, but it can often be a disaster when planning to suit a specific
company's requirements. We undertake block-stacking exercises on buildings
in the selection stages. We advise on the suitability of spaces in comparison
with another. This early space planning can prove invaluble in the selection
of the best space for the long term interest of the company.
SELECTED NEW OFFICES
We analyse the work practices of an office and look at the department
adjacencies, the complex work processes and the relationships in the office.
We formulate and advise on the master planning of a space and refine the
planning down to individual departments and desk arrangements.
SPECIFIC AREAS
In many instances we are called in to plan out how meeting room suites,
dining facilities or receptions should be planned. Work runs in parallel
with the interior design and the construction processes.
All work is undertaken on CAD and can be updated on a regular basis. Square
footages for cost allocation can be undertaken as can individual or department
square foot to people ratios.
We are often called in to re-plan groups as their business changes. Banks
and financial institutions undergo tremendous change in a year and without
the continuity of space planning the whole arrangement of an office can
dissolve into a free for all grabbing of space.
